Announcing our new advice column

Hey there!

I’m sure many of you can relate to having issues that lie somewhere between “I can figure this out on my own” and “I need to Google all the therapists within a 20-mile radius.” How do you talk to a roommate about the dirty dishes they leave all over the apartment? When is it time to break off a long-distance relationship? What do you do if you feel like you’re not making friends fast enough? These kinds of issues might not need a licensed professional but just somebody to offer a little outside perspective.

And that’s what I’m here for. Now, you might note that I am not old enough nor the correct gender to be anybody’s “Auntie,” but what I aspire to is more the distilled spirit of a “capital A” Aunt — someone who you feel comfortable approaching and who you can trust to give well-reasoned advice. I can’t promise to solve everything, but hopefully I can show you a way of thinking about something that might not have occurred to you.

You might reasonably ask, “Why should I trust Auntie Dillon? He’s not my real aunt! He’s not even my second cousin!” Well, dear reader who apparently is far closer to their second cousin than most of us, my qualifications are two-fold:

One, I’ve been the mom-friend of my social circle for years, so I have a pretty decent grasp on the basics of most interpersonal issues.

Two, I think any perspective from someone who can remain objective is pretty helpful in any context; one of the great failings of humanity is that it is so hard to see outside ourselves.

I can’t wait to hear from you.

Love,

Auntie Dillon
