Pumpkin’ up your autumn skin care routine

When the leaves begin to change and the weather cools off (fingers crossed), we know it’s time for fall festivities! Time to head to Jackson’s Orchard to pick out the perfect pumpkin to carve.

What do you do with all that gunk you pull out of the pumpkin before you carve it? You probably toss it. But, there will be no waste this year.

As if pumpkin wasn’t omnipresent enough, these DIY face masks turn all that goop into gold and give your nightly routine the extra autumnal kick you didn’t even know you needed.

Pumpkins contain enriching nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins C and A and zinc that help with skin renewal and collagen production. Enjoy these recipes that smell great and leave your skin feeling refreshed so you can put your best face forward this autumn.

First, puree your pumpkin.

1. In a large pot or pan, bring salted water to a boil.

2. Rinse your pumpkin or pieces of pumpkin to remove any dirt.

3. Use a spoon to scoop out the pulp and a knife to slice the pumpkin (if you aren’t using excess chunks after carving).

4. Peel the skin off the chunks and place the chunks in water

5. Let the pumpkin soak for 25 minutes or until tender.

6. Puree with a food processor or blender.

Canned pumpkin puree can be substituted for fresh pumpkins.


Now, let’s get to the masks:

Pump up the hydration

A mask for dry skin 

½ cup pumpkin pulp

2 eggs

2 teaspoon of almond milk or yogurt

1 tablespoon raw honey

1. Combine all ingredients and stir well.

2. Cleanse face.

3. Apply mask and leave for 20-30 minutes.

4. Rinse and moisturize.

Pumpkin we get some more glow

A mask for oily skin

½ cup pumpkin pulp

2 eggs

1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

1. Combine and stir well.

2. Cleanse face.

3. Apply and leave on for 15-20 minutes.

4. Rinse and moisturize.

PSL brightening mask

A scrub for all skin types

½ cup pumpkin pulp

3 tablespoons ground coffee

½ cup brown sugar

3 tablespoons honey

1. Combine and stir well.

2. Cleanse face.

3. Apply and leave on for 15-20 minutes.

4. Rinse and moisturize.
