An interview with photographer, Kreable Young

1. What drew you to take this image?
Before this photo was taken, I saw Harlie walk over to Haley while the women’s volleyball team was warming up. I knew that the two would have an intimate moment because I had seen them interact while working on the story earlier in the week. While I was standing next to them, Harlie laid back and imitated Haley while they shared this moment. I was drawn to take it because I knew it was a personal moment between Harlie and one of the players that needed to be shot in order to show the bond that the team has with her.
2. What do you aspire to be as a photojournalist?
I want to work somewhere that will allow me to take on long-term stories. I feel that my best work comes from when I am connected and close to my subjects, so working in an environment that allows me to do this would be ideal for me. I also love the feeling of accomplishing a story that impacts a group of people. After working on a project for a longer period of time, I really feel that my hard work has paid off when I hear that what I’ve worked on is appreciated by people.
3. What do you try to capture with your work?
I try to capture great moments. Especially the smaller, more hidden ones that we often overlook.
4. What are your favorite things to work on?
My favorite things to work on are longer stories that allow me to establish a relationship with people. I love learning about people and realizing how different every person or family is. Then, being able to photograph these stories and put them out for others to see is very rewarding. Especially when you realize that your story has made even the slightest impact on someone.

Bryant was diagnosed with Astrocytoma, a type of brain cancer, on April 1, 2011. In the fall of 2012, she began to hang out with the volleyball team. Now, she is treated as if she were one of their own teammates. Before each game, Bryant warms up with the team while they prepare to play their matches.
