Start your day sweet: “Ice Cream for Breakfast” at Chaney’s Dairy Barn

Guests lined up inside Chaney’s Dairy Barn in Bowling Green as they held the annual celebration of “Ice Cream for Breakfast” Day on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15.

According to the Days of the Year, “Ice Cream for Breakfast” Day started as a small tradition. However, it has grown into a national event, with ice cream shops nationwide participating — including Chaney’s.

Carl Chaney from Bowling Green and co-owner of Chaney’s Dairy Barn said the event invites families and friends to enjoy their favorite frozen treats right after waking up. He said it is a popular event for people to experience.

“The kids and the parents really enjoy it,” Carl Chaney said. “I like seeing the joy on their little faces.”

The doors opened at 8 a.m. as children in their pajamas and community members awaited sweet treats. On top of their classic flavors, including strawberry, peanut butter fudge swirl and Wow Now Brownie Cow, other dessert foods were available.

The event featured doughnut sundaes with donuts made from Gus’s Groovy Donuts Bus and the Great American Donut Shop. All doughnuts were topped with Chaney Dairy Barn’s homemade ice cream and toppings such as sprinkles, cherries and peanuts.

Carl Chaney said that families with young children were especially encouraged to attend. He said the ice cream shop had a deal for children ages 10 and under to get a free kid’s donut sundae if they showed up in their pajamas.

Debra Chaney, co-owner of Chaney’s Dairy Barn and Carl Chaney’s wife, said that the event is a fun way to celebrate ice cream for breakfast.

Debra Chaney said that the event is not just about enjoying a sweet treat, but also an opportunity to give back to the community for giving so much to their farm. She said that participating in this event connects them to a large community of ice cream enthusiasts.

Hannah Medrano from Bowling Green said the event was special for the children because of their love for ice cream.

“This is our first time coming to the event,” Medrano said. “My family from Indiana came to visit, and we decided to come down with our young ones.”

Debra Chaney said that seeing the kids’ excitement is a highlight for her and possibly her favorite part.

“It is a joy to see the smiles on the kids’ faces knowing they get to have ice cream for breakfast,” Debra Chaney said. “It is a memory they will cherish for a long time.”
